Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day can be traced back to the 1600s when the ancient Greeks paid respects to mother goddesses, Cybele and Rhea. This established a special day being set aside to celebrate one’s Mother.

On May 10th 1908, the first Mother’s Day observation was held in Grafton, West Virginia.  Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had died in 1905, campaign to establish such a holiday to honor mothers.

In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother’s Day.  On May 9th 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Many Mother’s Day celebrations are held throughout the world.  However, they don’t all fall at the same day.  In the U.S. and many other countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Belgium, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

People wear carnations on this special day — pink or red for mothers still living, and white to honor mothers who have passed away.
