International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated around the world on May 12. This day is celebrates the contributions and commitment nurses make to society.
Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, had proposed President Dwight D. Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurses Day” in 1953, but President Dwight D. Eisenhower did not approve it. |
The decision of designated May 12 as nurses day was made as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing, was approved by President Richard Nixon in January 1974.
Licensed registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and nurses aids are all included in the celebrations.
